How to Wear a Turtleneck
Very much like my credit score, and frankly my post-college liver, turtlenecks have made a huge comeback in 2017! This resurgence, it felt like a natural transition, you know? Because now you cannot go far without seeing a dapper gent wearing one for this winter season. I don’t know if it was a subconscious hint from some steez I quickly scrolled past on Instagram or some weird supernatural connection with the style gods, but the turtleneck just felt like the obvious choice for my previous menswear post, Wearing Statement Pieces.
The turtleneck’s strong comeback was necessary during this seemingly less is more climate in menswear lately. Little to no patterns, conservative pocket square tucks, colors that are more muted, these are the characteristics you will notice in today’s men’s style landscape. The turtleneck fits in that mold effortlessly. Also, let's face it, upon wearing a turtleneck, you immediately feel hella svelte in a sort of command the room sort of way.
In this look, I wanted to emphasize the sharpness of the jacket’s cut and the broad lapels. That is why I went with no lapel pins, or pocket squares. The point here is to let the jacket speak for itself while the tortoise frame sunglasses provides a subtle hint of flair. Now, the turtleneck does an effective job at making an otherwise simple look appear dressier. It helps draw the eyes to your face and chisels your jawline giving you a more regal appearance despite how ratchet your upbringing might have been.
Given the inherent mysteriousness that it adds and the neck fat it subtracts; It is the perfect piece to wear on a romantic date. So, give it a try, throw on a dark turtleneck on your next date, if she doesn’t ask for dessert to-go, I’ll refund you the money you paid for this advice.
